Rattan is a group of palms of tribes who have a habitus Calameae climbing, especially Calamus, Daemonorops, and Oncocalamus. Calameae own tribe consists of about six hundred members, with dispersal in the tropical regions of Africa, Asia and Australia.
Entrance in this clan including clan Salacca (eg barking), Metroxylon (eg thatch / sago), and Pigafetta who do not climb.
Trunk usually slender with 2-5cm diameter, long edged, not hollow, and many are protected by thorns long and hard and sharp. Duri serves as a means of self defense from herbivores, while helping climbing, because the tree is not equipped with tendrils.
A wicker trunk can reach hundreds of meters long. The stem is cut down and remove the water if it can be used as a way to survive in the wild. Javan rhino is also known to make this tree as one of the menu.
Most of these trees come from forests in Maleysia, such as Sumatra, Java, Borneo, Sulawesi and Nusa Tenggara. Indonesia supplies 70% of world rattan. Time market filled from Malaysia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.
Rattan fast growing and relatively easy to harvest and ditransprotasi. This is thought to help preserve forests, because people prefer to harvest these trees rather than timber.
